How credit checks work in Sri Lanka

A source-based guide to CRIB MyReport, the 250–900 CRIB Score, five-year data retention after settlement and the formal dispute process.

A credit check in Sri Lanka is not a single yes/no test. A lender can review information from the Credit Information Bureau of Sri Lanka (CRIB), its own application data, income and affordability information, existing commitments and internal risk rules before making a decision.

CRIB does not approve or reject loans. Its official FAQ says the lending institution makes the credit decision, and CRIB does not blacklist borrowers.

ComponentWhat it isWhat it is not
MyReportYour self-inquiry credit report containing credit information reported to CRIB, including positive and negative repayment information.A lender’s approval decision.
CRIB ScoreA three-digit risk score from 250 to 900; CRIB says a higher score indicates lower credit risk.A guarantee of approval or a permanent label.
Lender assessmentThe lender’s own decision using CRIB information plus its policy, income/expense assessment and other factors.A decision made by CRIB.

What affects a CRIB Score?

CRIB’s FAQ lists factors including past repayment behaviour, over-indebtedness, demographic details, use of available credit, guaranteed contracts, dishonoured cheques and inquiries by lending institutions. CRIB also explains that the score is generated when requested rather than stored permanently as part of the credit history.

That means a score can change as the underlying credit information changes. A missed payment can matter, but so can existing debt exposure and how available credit is used.

What the 250–900 range means

CRIB’s digital-access explanation says the score ranges from 250 to 900 and that a higher score corresponds to lower credit risk. The number should be read as one risk signal, not as a universal cut-off: different lenders can have different acceptance policies.

CRIB does not “blacklist” you

This is one of the clearest statements in CRIB’s FAQ. Having credit information at CRIB is normal for a person or business that has used credit. Good repayment history can be positive evidence. When a facility is settled or arrears are paid, the lending institution updates the status; CRIB states that borrower credit information remains in the report for five years after full settlement.

How to see your own information

CRIB offers MyReport services for consumers and has expanded digital access. Checking your own report before applying can help you spot outdated or incorrect information rather than discovering a problem during a lender’s assessment.

How to dispute an error

The CRIB disputes resolution process requires a dispute to be based on your MyReport. The completed Dispute Registration Form should reach CRIB within 30 days from the report issue date. CRIB states that at least 14 days is required to resolve a dispute because the reporting lending institution must investigate and respond.

Dispute stepOfficial guidance

Time limitThe form should reach CRIB within 30 days from the MyReport issue date.
Resolution timeCRIB says a minimum of 14 days is required because resolution depends on the relevant lending institution.

Can one rejection predict the next?

No. Different lenders can use different underwriting policies, affordability rules and risk thresholds. CRIB provides common information infrastructure, but the final decision belongs to the lender. That is why a single rejection should not be interpreted as a permanent inability to borrow — and it also should not encourage repeated applications without understanding the reason.

How to prepare before an online loan application

  1. Check your MyReport if you are unsure what is recorded.
  2. Correct genuine discrepancies through the formal dispute process.
  3. List existing monthly debt payments and essential expenses.
  4. Compare the total cost of the new loan, not only the requested amount.
  5. Avoid making many unnecessary applications simply to “test” approval.
