Checking a finance company licence takes only a few minutes, but it requires matching the legal entity, not just recognising a brand name or logo. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka maintains the official list of licensed finance companies and currently dates that register 10 August 2026.
Step-by-step licence check
- Find the exact legal name. Look at the website footer, application form, privacy notice or proposed agreement. A marketing brand can differ from the incorporated company name.
- Open the CBSL register. Use the Authorized Financial Institutions section, not a search-engine snippet or social-media post.
- Match the legal name exactly. Similar words in a brand name are not enough.
- Compare contact details. Use the phone number, address and website listed by CBSL to cross-check the service you are dealing with.
- Read any official note attached to the entry. A current register may contain notes or regulatory information that an old article misses.
- Use the verified company website for branch information. This is especially useful when the search started with “finance companies near me”.
What different checks actually prove
| Check | What it can prove | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| CBSL licensed finance companies register | The named legal entity appears on the current regulator list as a licensed finance company. | That every product is suitable for you or that a particular application will be approved. |
| Company registration | A legal company exists under corporate law. | That it has a finance-company licence. |
| SLDIS information | Whether eligible deposits at member institutions fall within the deposit-insurance framework and current coverage rules. | Protection against losses on a consumer loan or guarantee of an institution’s products. |
| App-store or website presence | That a digital product or website exists. | Regulatory status, licensing or safety. |
| Loan24 profile | A structured summary for comparison. | An official licence certificate; the regulator remains the source of truth. |
Why the exact legal name matters
The phrase “finance company” has a specific regulatory meaning in Sri Lanka. CBSL describes the Finance Business Act No. 42 of 2011 as the law providing for control and supervision of licensed finance companies and curbing unauthorised finance business. That is different from the broad everyday term financial company and different again from online lender.
An online lender can operate through a website or app, but that digital description does not by itself tell you whether the underlying business is a licensed finance company, a bank, another regulated financial institution, or a comparison service.
What about deposits?
If you are checking a finance company because you want to place a deposit, licence verification becomes even more important. CBSL’s deposit-insurance FAQ says the current Sri Lanka Deposit Insurance Scheme coverage is up to Rs. 1.1 million per depositor, per institution, subject to the scheme’s eligibility rules. Deposit insurance is about eligible deposits; it does not make a loan cheaper or guarantee every financial product.
How to find finance companies near me safely
Use maps or a branch locator only after checking the legal entity. CBSL reported that the finance-company sector had 1,998 branches at end 2025, including 1,333 branches outside the Western Province. That large network means a “near me” search can return many locations, but the regulator’s list should come first when verifying who the branch belongs to.
What to do if something does not match
Do not send money, NIC images, bank credentials or signed documents until you understand the mismatch. Contact the company using the contact information from the CBSL register rather than a number supplied in an unsolicited message. For regulated financial services, CBSL launched a digital Complaint Management System for financial consumers in May 2026; its process expects the consumer to complain to the relevant financial service provider first and escalate unresolved eligible issues to CBSL.
